A Gift of Words

The Gift of Lies

Lying can be a true gift if used sparingly.

To tell the truth I would be lying to you because there is no truth, just perception of truth on earth. Humans have invented truth and lies, but what is truth? Truth comes in many forms. “Slightly true.” We say.

If you are going to lie, lie wisely. An outright lie will only exacerbate the situation.

“Liar, Liar pants on fire” Remember that saying when you were a kid? Then Pinocchio came along and his nose grew bigger as he lied more and more….

Everyone lies either to themselves or to others. No exceptions. Flat statement I know. Just think that when you want something, against something that you need. You have to choose one, what will it be? You talked yourself into what you wanted I bet.

Then there are the little white lies we tell people so that we can steer them away from controversy, or away from confrontation, or JUST away.

We lie by omission. How many times have we been asked a question and knew the answer but did not want to say the truth because we did not want to hurt someone. “I plead the 5th.” you say.

Can Lying be a Virtue? That’s an ethical question at best, that needs answers. One example that comes to mind is that people will and do lie for good causes, because they firmly believe that to lie in circumstances that have a good outcome outweighs the evil if the lie did not occur.

Lying is bad because it corrupts the Liar. In the news recently we hear a lot about fake news. Lying is everywhere, we don’t know what to believe and we sure don’t trust the internet.

Dressing up to hide things about you that you do not like, having plastic surgeries, masking what we perceive as ugly, or how we would like certain things to appear, is lying. Be yourself and don’t let color, height, speech, accents, baldness, over weight issues etc… get in your way of telling the truth.

Be all you can be with the truth. The truth will set you free. Embrace and not hide. Hiding is a lie that tells people you are not who you really are and that you want to be someone else that you’re not.

The truth is we all lie.

When lying is a good thing: To help another person out in a tough situation when the lie will do no damage.

When you exaggerate you lie. A little white lie or is it a BIG FAT lie?

“There is beauty in truth, even if it's painful. Those who lie, twist life so that it looks tasty to the lazy, brilliant to the ignorant, and powerful to the weak. But lies only strengthen our defects. They don't teach anything, help anything, fix anything or cure anything. Nor do they develop one's character, one's mind, one's heart or one's soul.”

― José N.

If you don’t believe this lie is true, ask the blind man he saw it to.

Parting thought: When you see someone on their deathbed, just before they croak, you will tell them that you love them but is it really true? The departed will leave us with a smile on their face, but did they believe you told a last lie or the truth? The funny thing about a lie is that it can invoke a smile that can be a lie as well.
